Fostering Kittens

A neighbor brought over 4 abandoned kittens he found under a shed. The kids were thrilled but agreed that we could not keep them. We fostered them for a couple of days until good homes were found for all four. Long nights and many scratches from sharp little claws, but everyone did very well. Two of the kittens were adopted by our friends so we will get to see them grow!

New City Library

We heard on the news about the opening of the new city library so we had to go check it out. There was a smell of newness everywhere, and fancy furniture and fountains and four floors of books, and even high tech check-out stations. It is a beautiful place but I miss the old smell of the old library....

We are so happy that Joy has come to live with us. After a week it's hard to imagine that she hasn't always been a part of the family. She has completely settled into our lives and is infecting us all with joy!

This very cute squirrel came over to us at the park and stole some of our snacks. He didn't even bother to run off with them. He just sat at the edge of the table and ate, as if waiting for more. He's obviously used to being fed by humans as he had no fear. Either that, or he is very aware of how adorable he is.

Shhhhhh....there is a really neat little beach with a dock right behind Dr. Hartman's office. Very few people know about this and we are keeping it a secret. It sure is a fun place to know about when you have to wait. The time went by really quickly and we can't wait to go again!

Seacrest Scrub Natural Area-Boynton Beach

Seacrest Scrub is one of those places we drove by hundreds of times and finally stopped to check it out. This natural area consists of 54 acres that have been left undisturbed even though it is surrounded by residential and commercial property. You enter the trail on the east side of seacrest Blvd, just south of Bethesda hospital and before you get to Delray Beach.

Today was a perfect day to walk through and observe the beauty and peacefulness of this hidden treasure.

Lots of gopher tortoises call this home and burrows

like this are located throughout.

Their presence is also evidenced by the bite marks on the prickly pear cactus.

We drove to Toys R Us so Isaac could download

Mounts Botanical Gardens

Today we visited

Mounts Botanical Gardens in

West Palm Beach.

It had been awhile since our last visit and it is even more

beautiful than we remembered.

The weather was perfect and there were so many things in bloom

that it's hard to believe this is winter.

The natural maze has grown very tall but the kids commented

that it seems to be getting smaller to them!

The White alligator at the Palm Beach Zoo almosts looks fake. We stayed and watched it for awhile just to make sure it moved. Oh, and Eric spotted some of it's poop, which proves beyond any doubt that it is real. It's only there for a limited time so we were lucky we got to see it!

There was quite a bit of chill in the air and it seemed that everywhere you looked there were iguanas soaking up the warmth of the sun.

We also saw Maya, the new baby jaguar. She was having such a good time playing with her mom.

We have been posing for pictures on these bronze tortoise statues for years. Even when we get too big to sit on them, we will never be too old for the zoo.

We met our friends Wendy, Sidney and Seger at the South Florida Science Museum for some pre-Halloween fun. The kids participated in a costume parade through the museum and enjoyed the many treats throughout.

Tonight the kids were invited to see their friend, Julia Harris in her first big stage performance at the Lake Worth Playhouse. She is performing in "Big River" until November 9th. All of them really enjoyed the show and highly recommend it. You should try to get there to see it. Julia is the youngest cast member and is in the center of the photo below.

She's got a big future ahead of her!

South Florida Science Museum

Eddie and Rebecca Lippel came to Florida for a visit. Here is everyone having a blast at the South Florida Science Museum.

They got to build a platypus at the Robot Zoo exhibit and design and build their own robots. Outside was a setup to create huge bubbles.

The Egyptian area is always among the favorites.

Isaac discovered that Yugioh cards are designed using lots of Egyptian influence.

The Colucci Family came over to celebrate with us. The kids were having such a good time together and since the weather was rainy we decided to stay home. We really didn't miss out on fireworks because they were everywhere! The sky was ablaze with lights from all directions. We blew up quite a few rockets too and the kids really had a "blast".

Ellie's 50's Diner is our very favorite place to eat. We always have such a great time there. It's fun to visit with our friend Jim who always makes the kids feel so special.

Today was a busy day! Everyone had to be up and fed and showered and dressed up and ready to go by 2p.m. for the wedding. We made it but forgot the camera so we will have to wait and see everyone else's pictures.

A Trip to the Eye Doctor

It was time for everyone to get eye exams since it's been almost 2 years. Isaac went last week and we didn't get any pictures but he did get to pick out some new glasses. It turns out he is nearsighted just like me.

I got my first glasses at 11 also.Eric kept making up things he was seeing just to keep the doctor on her toes. She eventually figured out he was pulling her leg and wanting to see if he could trick her into prescribing glasses for him.

Eric was a bit dissappointed that he has perfect vision.
They both got to wear these cool glasses when leaving to protect their dilated pupils from the sun.

We had a Dragonfly come to visit. That's lucky isn't it? Or is it just ladybugs that are lucky? I'm going with lucky because we really enjoyed the visit and we even got some pictures since it was quite friendly and took turns landing on each of us in a very social way.

We also discovered a new addition to our aquarium family! The crayfish that we once thought of as a mean bully turned out to be a mama defending her baby. She wasn't just snapping at the fish that came swimming too close to her castle. She actually caught a few of them and dragged them down to feast on them. We now know that she did it to insure that they didn't eat her newborn first. Doesn't seem like she's such a bully now that we have more info. She has been in the tank since last summer and was the only crayfish. So imagine our surprise when we discovered a little tiny crayfish walking around one night. Turns out crayfish can do that (thanks google!) Basically mamas can choose the right time to fertilize their eggs and some species don't even require a mate. Interesting critters they are, which led to very interesting discussions around here.

Yesterday Julia came over to play and everyone was having too much fun to stop. They decided to have a sleepover so the good times would continue. Before bed they took in some Star Wars (upside down?)

Earth Day, a day late...

Well, we really celebrate it everyday so who cares? We ran out of daylight yesterday so today we planted our tree. It was actually a branch from the Gumbo Limbo tree that John planted in the front yard. It has been growing in a pot for a couple of years and now it finally has a permanent home in our back yard. Eric noticed that it was exactly as tall as he is. I hope it grows quickly enough for Eric to be able to climb. He really loves climbing trees and if he is anything like me, he will still enjoy it for many more years.

Dental Day!

Yesterday Eric's tooth that has literally been hanging for weeks finally fell out. This is his first tooth for the tooth fairy so he was very excited. It really took a long time to come out in spite of many, many apples he has bitten into to try and "help it". The new tooth was already growing right behind it and is almost full size so he doesn't really look like he just lost a tooth! He was running outside playing while holding on to this tooth and I was worried he would lose it. I knew how upsetting this would be to him so I offered to hold it for him for safekeeping. The only problem is that within minutes I had LOST THE TOOTH! We looked all over for it but had no luck finding it. I got up early this morning and started the search again and found it. It was outside in the grass. Luckily it was in a small baggie or it would have been lost forever. Tonight Eric will put it under his pillow.

Just a little while ago Isaac had a baby molar fall out. At least the tooth fairy can take care of both with one trip!

A New Blog Account

I thought it would be a good idea to set up a family blog so I chose a name and much to my surprise it already was being used. I thought the name Wurm was unusual enough so I was curious to see who else was out there blogging as the Wurm family. Oops, I found it was me, from 2005. So much for keeping up with it. I had good intentions to continue been I didn't.... I'm hoping this time I will be able to keep it up. At least there will be pictures since our lives are always filled with those.
